With the inconsistent power supply being a current issue in Southern Africa, contractors need to be aware of preventative measures to avoid damages due to power surges and power interruptions. Damage to machines can be extensive and costly if not connected in the correct manner.
Using incorrect extension cords or excessively long extension cords has to raise a red flag immediately. The voltage supplied to the machine will not be correct and fluctuations will occur. Another problem that is prevalent on construction sites are connecting numerous machines to one power source – this also depletes the current supplied and in the long run causes damage that can be prevented.
Site Agents and Supervisors need to be up to date with requirements in order to identify possible issues before they occur and act accordingly. Preventative measures are by far the best option which means no interruptions on site and lower costs and maintenance on machines, running at their optimum output.
